April
Michael Kelsey - The Edinburgh Pixy Theatre
April 28, 2012 7pm
MICHAEL KELSEY cannot be limited to a simple description. When you listen to his music and see him perform live you're witnessing more than a just another inger-songwriter. You're watching a rhythmic, inspired guitarist and performance artist who brews soul, funk and even a little bit of the blues into a guitar festival of organic sound. Multi-instrumentalist Kelsey has been known to blend many musical genres with fervor and grace. When he hits the stage to perform, he plays every inch of his guitar and makes it sing, soar, pop and ping--by strumming it, pounding it and pulling every part of it or anything else an arm's length or foot kick away.

"There is a five piece band in my head. They all have different tastes in music and they are all trying to escape at the same time through my hands, feet and mouth. I hang onto an acoustic guitar and see what happens," Kelsey sums up his stage show aptly. He is well versed in the art of entertaining and at every show he creates a rare army of sound that comes from one man, a voice and an acoustic guitar.

Kelsey's abilities have enabled him to be noticed by many. A finalist in Guitar Player Magazine's national competition and winner of Guitar Center's "Guitarmageddon," chosen as best unsigned guitarist out of over 3000 entrants nationwide says it all. This allowed him to be apart of Eric Clapton's Crossroads 2004 performance where he shared the stage with many of the guitar legends such as Santana, Steve Vai, and Eric Clapton.

"Michael Kelsey's performance is more than just song and lyrics - it is an experience. Beat boxing, acoustic guitar, percussion on a turntable...Kelsey transcends the solo singer-songwriter performance." - Nuvo Magazine

Mel and The Mizfits - The Edinburgh Pixy Theatre
March 10, 2012 7pm
The Mizfits were born in Brown County, Indiana, in 2005. Jazz musician,
Mel Chance, happened to attend a performance by folksinger, Lou Stant.
On a lark, they played some numbers together. The crowd response
to such an unusual combination was, to their surprise, quite favorable.
Figuring they were on to something, Mel and Lou started performing
together regularly. Later, country bass player Steve Mara heard them
rehearse, liked what he heard, and joined them for a gig, pushing
eclecticism to even more absurd lengths. The unlikely duo was thereby
transformed into the present enigmatic trio of misfits. Later, due to
health issues, Steve Mara had to leave the trio and bass player, Dennis
Huntington, joined the group.

February
Cara Jean Wahlers - The Edinburgh Pixy Theatre
February 25, 2012 7pm
Cara Jean Wahlers released her debut album, Goodnight Charlotte in 2010.
Since then, it's garnered national press and has received mentions on
numerous local Top Ten lists, including Best Local Album (Roots/Acoustic)
2010, included charting on the Village Voice's (NYC) Pazz and Jop 2010
listing. Nuvo's Rob Nichols' says, "Wahlers works inside a pleasing Joni
Mitchell/Ricki Lee Jones/Emmylou Harris template - more West coast than
rural - though a hint of Indiana in her voice helps anchor a sound more
organic than shiny." She is currently working on a follow-up album and
writing a play. For more info, carajeanwahlers.com

Heartfelt lyrics and wit are at the core of many singer-songwriters, but
the ability to translate feelings to others is where Joel Henderson sets
himself apart. With true-to-self lyrics and timeless melodies, Henderson
combines folk, country, blues, gospel, and classic pop with equal
reverence. Henderson's new album Locked Doors & Pretty Fences is a
gorgeously melodic and thoughtful endeavor. Produced by Paul Mahern,
Henderson captures shades of heartland heroes like John Mellencamp, Bruce
Springsteen, and James McMurtry; but Henderson's tunes are also right at
home on a playlist of contemporaries like Ron Sexsmith, Amos Lee, and Ryan
Adams. Whether performing solo or with his band, Henderson promises an
intimate experience of storytelling, fine musicianship and beautiful
songs. For more info, joelhenderson.com

Together, Cara Jean Wahlers and Joel Henderson weave Gillian Welch/David
Rawlings like two part harmonies, with Henderson's guitar and Wahlers'
upright bass.

January
Hogeye Navvy - The Edinburgh Pixy Theatre
January 28, 2012 7pm

Terry Bellner - Vocals, Concertina, Irish Tenor Banjo

Garry Farren - Vocals, Bodhran, Percussion

Mac Bellner - Vocals, Guitar

Ken Langell - Vocals, Octave Mandolin, Guitar

Are you among those who wonder about the source of the name "Hogeye Navvy"? We've promised to put something about it on the website and have been remiss in getting it on here, but here's some basic info.

A 'navvy' is a workman - a laborer- who works outside in sun, wind, and weather. At least that's what the name came to mean, so that sailors, railroaders, and other laborers were referred to as navvies. The name originated, so we've been told, from the men working for the Inland Navigation Company in England who dug the original canals throughout the British Isles. 'Navigation' company workers came to be called 'navvies' and eventually the name carried over to all outdoor laborers.

The definition of a 'hogeye' is still in dispute, at least between Garry and Mac! Garry still swears by his grandfather's definition that sailors were called 'hogeyes' because they squinted in the sun (like Popeye and like pigs). That his grandfather was from West-by-God-Virginia is enough for Garry to believe this is the final word. Mac thinks there are too many other references to 'hogeye' among sea shanties and in other places for that to be the origin of the word. For example, the man who walked along a canal towpath and drove the mule towing a boat was called the 'hoggee' (hence, perhaps, the road down in southern Ohio right near the river that is called "Hogeye Road"). That fellow likely was not squinting in the sun. Besides which, as Mac says, any pig she's ever known (and one used to live in her house!) did not have squinty eyes. Beady eyes, maybe, but not squinty ones.

A fellow from California who was at one of our performances asked Mac if we knew the origin of the word, then said that in the Gold Rush days in California there was a kind of big barge that worked up and down the coast, and a bit on the inland rivers, that had big D rings on each side for towing. The rings were called 'hogeyes' and the men who worked on the barges were referred to as 'hogeye sailors' or 'hogeye men' or just 'hogeyes'. This was not a complimentary term, since these men were ridiculed as ones who were too cowardly to work on ships that sailed the high seas, but stuck close to shore. Whether 'tis true, we'll never really know. However, it is true that the first line of our "namesake" song, Hogeye Man, says, "Oh the hogeye sailors roll and go when they come down from San Francisco" and that sure sounds right to Mac.

So, there it is, though there may be more to come as we continue to try to track down the origins of our name!

Dishpan Pie - The Edinburgh Pixy Theatre
December 17, 2011 7pm
Dishpan Pie has been performing traditional American folk music for 22 years. Band members Kent and Marianne Lockman, Dee Capozzi performed publicly for the first time in a small dinner theater in February 1987 and then again at a folk festival in June of the same year. They all decided they liked the music and each other and remained the Once In Awhile Stringband until summer 2008.

In May of 2008 Dee, Kent, and Marianne tightened up their old tunes and songs, added fresh new ones, and chose a new band name...Dishpan Pie. Dishpan Pie is an old southern chicken pot-pie recipe where one uses an enamelware dishpan as their baking dish. It's definitely a delicious recipe that matches the old time flavor of Dishpan Pie's music. For the recipe, email the band and they will get a copy to you. Let them know how your dishpan pie turned out!

A Pixy Christmas Carol - The Edinburgh Pixy Theatre
December 10, 2011 6:30pm
"A Pixy Christmas Carol"

Onstage:
6:30pm The Irvington Chorale
7:30pm Ted Yoder - Hammered Dulcimer
8:30pm The Arsenal Technical High School Choir

Great Hall:
An Evening of Holiday Music
on the restored 1908 Aeolian Organ

About the artists:
Ted Yoder - Ted Yoder plays hammered dulcimer.

You've heard people play hammered dulcimer before - the guy at the Maple Syrup Festival last spring; that Christmas CD you picked up in that gift shop in Tennessee.

That's not Ted.

Life-long Indiana native Ted grew up in a musically inclined family, like a lot of musicians. His whole life has been filled with writing, performing, recording, experimenting with new instruments... But it wasn't until Ted received his first hammered dulcimer as a wedding gift that Ted knew he'd found his niche. Ted decided that the hammered dulcimer had gotten a bad rap, being narrowly categorized as a mountain bluegrass instrument. Ted knew there was great potential here as he began mastering and experimenting with this eclectic and maligned instrument.

Drawing on his gospel and rock and roll roots, Ted was able to create something never heard before: a dulcimer that doesn't sound like a dulcimer "should." With master skill, Ted plays his dulcimer almost like a piano, unafraid to tackle complex rhythms and unusual harmonics. The result is a sound that makes the trained listener say, "How many hands does this guy have?"

Ted's musicianship, creativity and ability to put a fresh face on dulcimer music led him to the title of 2010 National Hammer Dulcimer Champion - only the third performer to be crowned Champion on his first appearance at the Walnut Valley Festival.

Capturing the Championship title, Ted decided it was time to go professional. Since then, he has released two CD's: - "Songs From Walnut Valley," a compendium of original songs (plus one Bach number) that he played in competition to earn his title. This album really shows off Ted's ability as a songwriter. "Storm" and "Moon Over the Water," in particular reveal Ted's rock and roll roots.- "Comfort and Joy," a Christmas album featuring Ted's unique interpretations of traditional Christmas numbers. Despite Ted being an untried artist, this album gained international airplay.

Ted has played at the Blue Gate Theater, Gaither Fall Festival, Gebhard Woods Dulcimer Festival, Charley Creek Arts Festival, Kentucky Winter Dulcimer Weekend and the National Bible Bee, as well as performing for CCM veterans Bill and Gloria Gaither.

Area Code 812 - The Edinburgh Pixy Theatre
December 9, 2011 7pm
The boys in AREA CODE 812 all have roots in the region of southern Indiana referenced in their name. But their musical roots go much farther south...and east, west & north! At any given show, you may be treated to some of the best traditional bluegrass music you've ever heard, and the next song might be blues, classic rock, country of folk. Whatever they choose, it's going to be fun and well-done! Vocalist TIM WRIGHT can take you from a warm, intimate moment with a James Taylor tune straight to hard-core bluegrass, Beatles, Eric Clapton, Merle Haggard, Byrds, John Prine or Bob Dylan quicker than Ferrari can take you from 0 to 60! He's a human jukebox with decades of experience as a member of legendary Indiana band, The Wright Brothers. His world-class guitar & banjo playing is taken to the next level when paired with right-hand man, MICHAEL CLARK's intense acoustic guitar skills. He's honed his skills through years of recording session work with everyone from John Mellencamp to Rodney Carrington and as a producer, has two Gold Records under his belt and a long list of happy clients. From lightning-fast & squeaky- clean flat-picking leads booming out of a vintage Martin, to tasty & delicate 12-string lines that transport listeners back to the best music from the '60's, Michael does it all! The last piece of the trio is upright bassist and emcee, DEAN METCALF. Dean holds down the bottom while Tim & Michael fly high with musical precision that must be seen to be believed. In between songs, his years of producing The Bob & Tom Show on morning radio kick in.

He keeps things moving with whatever banter pops into his head, typically getting laughs from folks in the audience as well as his band mates on-stage.

All of this fun is accompanied by stellar musicianship and 3 part harmony from a band with about 120 years of professional musical experience between just the three of them! Do yourself a favor and catch AREA CODE 812 when they make their appearance at The Edinburgh Pixy Theatre. It's a show that's sure to leave you smiling!
